Plasma cutting as we all know is a very popular means of cutting various types of metal and is used widely in several industries to meet their cutting requirements. Plasma cutting is often used for cutting applications done by hand or for mechanized cutting. It is used where other cutting methods cannot be employed.
Type of Metal
Plasma cutting can be used to cut any metal that is electrically conductive such as aluminium and steel. The cutting process can also be used for metal that is painted, rusted or expanded.
Thickness of Metal
Plasma cutting can be employed to cut aluminium, mild steel and stainless steel of 26mm to 50mm gauge thickness. It can also cut aluminium and stainless steel up to 182mm thickness, though in this case some finishing may be needed.
Quality of the Cut
Plasma cutting produces very high quality, precision cuts, and the heat affected zone is quite narrow (less than 0.25mm). The right choice of gases and process will cause minimum hardening of the edges and allows for good weldability. The smooth motion of the torch produces reasonably smooth edges and there is minimal dross produced.
Plasma cutting is faster than laser cutting on materials that are 6mm or thicker and it is also faster than oxyfuel cutting for materials up to 50mm thickness.
The operating cost when using plasma cutting is quite low. The cost per part of all materials and thicknesses up to 50mm is low. The service and maintenance cost of plasma cutting equipment is also quite low.
The capital cost for plasma cutting equipment is much lower than laser and waterjet methods of cutting.
Air plasma cutting systems are very lightweight and highly portable. These days, plasma cutting systems are designed in a way that they can work very well when connected to a generator. Some plasma cutting systems have inbuilt air compressors which facilitate easy movement and transportation.
Finally, we can see that as a cutting process, plasma cutting is gaining widespread acceptance. Plasma cutting is a more productive and faster process when compared to other methods of cutting such as waterjet, laser and oxyfuel cutting, where metals of thickness 6mm to 50mm are being cut, using mechanized cutting process. Also, the capability of plasma cutting to cut a wide range of conductive materials makes it a very versatile and efficient cutting process.
