In this second part of the series, we continue to delve deeper into tips that will help you get the most out from your plasma cutting machine from Escco.
Cutting at a Suitable Speed
When cutting, if the speed is too slow then “slow speed dross” is created; this means that molten metal collects at the lower portion where the metal has been cut. If the speed is very high, then “high speed dross” occurs on top of the metal surface as the arc cannot completely enter and cut the metal. Also, traveling too slow or too fast will not create a precise, high-quality cut. So, you must move at the right cutting speed so that the molten metal spray will blow out at a 15°-20° angle and little or no dross is formed.
When You Begin, the Current Must Be Set to the Maximum Limit
When you begin the cutting process, set the current to the maximum limit and then slowly reduce it as required. Higher power is preferable except when you are performing precision cuts or you need the kerf to be very small.
Minimise the Time for the Pilot Arc
Reduce the time that the plasma torch is kept in the pilot arc option, as this causes the consumables to wear out quickly. Before turning on the arc, place the torch at the corner of the workpiece so that you can begin cutting straight away.
Maintaining a Consistent Work Distance
You should ideally maintain a distance of 3/16″- 1/8″ between the nozzle and the workpiece. If you operate the torch in a haphazard manner, your cutting efforts will be hindered and you will not get accurate cuts.
Follow a Cutting Path Where You Will Get the Best Cut Quality
If a circular piece is being cut, then move the cutter clockwise. If you need to retain the portion where the circular piece was cut from, then move the cutter counter clockwise. When the plasma torch is pushed away, you will get a better cut to the right side of the metal being cut, as it has a better and squarer edge.
Once you have found the plasma cutting machine that is right for your cutting applications and you have learnt some cutting tips and tricks, you are all set to begin cutting. These tips will help you use your plasma cutting machine in a more efficient and safer manner and help you get faster and superior quality cuts.
